Welcome to the Explore the River Education Project The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes have developed a comprehensive multimedia education package that describes the characteristics and values of healthy aquatic and riparian ecosystems, the ecology and importance of bull trout, and the relationship between bull trout and the Salish and Pend d’Oreille people.
The Explore the River Project
is composed of an integrated set of educational materials that includes an interactive DVD, a storybook, a field journal, a curriculum, and this web site.
The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes have undertaken a large-scale watershed restoration project in an effort to benefit bull trout and other native species in the Jocko River drainage. One important component of this comprehensive project is education and outreach, the centerpiece of which is this multimedia education package. Importantly, the materials have been developed by the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, integrating scientific information about bull trout and state-of-the-art restoration strategies and techniques with information from Tribal elders about the Tribes’ long-term relationship with bull trout and other native species. Use the menu at the top of this page to look at samples from each of the components or order them from the Salish and Kootenai Tribes or the University of Nebraska Press.
